Day 6: A full day to end our trip
Our last full day in Honruras began especially early so that we could return to La Ceibita, the small town that’s home to Keilin (above center) the young girl who our youth group sponsors through Por Que No Tu.
In the morning, the boys were concreting the floor of the kindergarten while the girls visited a neighboring house to prepare a lunch of catrachas.
I spent most of the time helping concrete the floor, which was a new experience for most of us. Learning to mix the concrete and spread it from people who spoke Spanish was a great time. After it was completely laid and partially hardened, they spread color over the top in a swirling pattern.
While this was happening, the girls were at a neighboring home pressing and cooking catrachas, a fried flatbread with refried beans and cheese. They made over 200 of them, because we were cooking for our next destination, lunch at the elementary school with around 40 students.
Beforehand, we performed the wedding feast skit while Stephanie, one of our translators, translated into Spanish for us. This and a few kids worship songs got many laughs from the children, particularly “Father Abraham.”
Afterward, we played soccer, jumped rope, colored and played and other games with the kids before we returned to the mission to pack for our flight home, have dinner and devotions, and debrief.
We leave at 2:30 a.m. for yet another ride standing in the bed of a truck, en route to the airport. Including Justin’s workers and translators, one of the trucks carried a total of 14 people today.
